Taverns and Drinking in Early America
Sharon V. Salinger

American colonists knew two types of public buildings, churches and taverns-the latter far
outnumbering the former. Salinger, professor of history at the University of California, Riverside,
will discuss her book that looks at the role drinking and tavern played in the lives of colonial
Americans and provides new insights into the ubiquity of public houses, the rules governing them,
and the many functions they served.

Fee: $6 (FTM members free) includes museum admission and light refreshments.

Cloth was expensive and every scrap was put to use in colonial homes. When clothes or
household linens were worn out, scraps could be braided into rugs. Make a small rag rug
to use as a hot pad or decoration - they're a great Mother's Day gift.
