Tallmadge Day Stated Meeting and Optional Dinner

On Monday, January 27, 2025, SRNY commemorates the birthday of Frederick Samuel Tallmadge, whose generosity enabled the Society to acquire Fraunces Tavern in 1904. More about Tallmadge and Tallmadge Day can be found on our website.

6:30pm reception
7:00pm program
8:00pm optional dinner (at Fraunces Tavern®)

Our guest speaker will be Richard Brookhiser, author of Glorious Lessons: John Trumbull, Painter of the American Revolution. This engaging book tells the life-story of John Trumbull, and also explains the significance of Trumbull’s celebrated Revolutionary War paintings, which reflected Trumbull’s personal experience as aide to George Washington and to Horatio Gates. Four of John Trumbull's most famous paintings, The Declaration of Independence, Surrender of General Burgoyne, Surrender of Lord Cornwallis, and General George Washington Resigning His Commission, are on display in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda. Other Trumbull paintings are displayed in the Yale University Art Gallery, including Trumbull’s iconic The Battle of Bunker's Hill, June 17, 1775, a copy of which is included in our museum’s latest permanent exhibition, The Birch Trials at Fraunces Tavern.

Richard Brookhiser is a celebrated journalist and author who has written a series of biographies and other books on American founders and other leading figures in American history, including Alexander Hamilton, Governor Morris, George Washington, John Marshall, James Madison, Abraham Lincoln and the Adams family dynasty. He curated “Alexander Hamilton: The Man Who Made Modern America,” an exhibition at The New York Historical; and wrote and hosted “Rediscovering George Washington” and “Rediscovering Alexander Hamilton,” films by Michael Pack which aired on PBS.

Evacuation Day Dinner

Evacuation Day Dinner

Evacuation Day marked the final British evacuation from New York City in 1783, after seven years of occupation. The evening culminated in a festive dinner given by Governor George Clinton, honoring George Washington and his officers at Samuel Fraunces‘ tavern.

Evacuation Day remained a New York City holiday into the 1910s, with celebrations rivaling those of the Fourth of July.

We look forward to celebrating as George Washington did that night, by raising our glasses for the very same thirteen toasts given at the first Evacuation Day Dinner at Fraunces Tavern on November 25, 1783.

Reception only: $20

Reception and Dinner: $150

6:30pm reception in the Museum's Kathryn and Shelby Cullom Davis Educational Center for American History includes wine, beer, and hors d'oeuvres.

7:30pm dinner in the Bissell Room of Fraunces Tavern includes a three-course meal, wine, and beer.

Exhibition Opening Preview, Reception, Lecture, and Optional Dinner for Lafayette: A Hero's Return

Join us for an opening preview reception, lecture, and optional dinner on June 24 for our upcoming special exhibition, Lafayette: A Hero’s Return, opening to the public on June 25.

Marquis de Lafayette, a young, wealthy French aristocrat, volunteered for and later led the Continental Army to victory with General George Washington during the American Revolutionary War. Before his death in 1834, Lafayette returned to the United States in 1824 as the last living general from the War. His visit not only helped President James Monroe celebrate the nation’s 50th anniversary, but also reignite its patriotism. He was welcomed with great fondness and fanfare by Americans in each of the then 24 states he visited over 13 months, especially in New York.

Fraunces Tavern® Museum joins the American Friends of Lafayette in celebrating the Bicentennial of Marquis de Lafayette’s return to the United States. This exhibition will showcase objects illustrating both his heroic war-time service and his tour of America.

At this event, preview the exhibition before it opens to the public and hear from Général de Brigade Vincent de Kytspotter, PhD, Head of the French Defense Mission to the United Nations, who will present a lecture, The French Are Coming! The Franco-American Military Alliance 1780-1782. Attendees can also choose to head down to Fraunces Tavern for a delicious dinner after the program.
